## Drink: The Continental Rooftop, Sorrento

The Continental’s rooftop does not need a special occasion, but the first weekend in September with a warm northerly and a Port Phillip sunset is about as close to a mandate as weather gets. The 150-year limestone hotel reopened its rooftop after restoration and it remains the highest and most persuasive argument for why Melbourne has been making this drive for a century. Order the Mornington Peninsula Pinot Gris from the by-the-glass list - the current pour changes but they keep something local - and stay until the sky goes pink over the bay. The crowd is mixed in spring: shoulder-season locals, early-booking weekenders, a scattering of day-trippers who stumbled upstairs. It doesn’t feel overrun yet. That changes by November. Book a rooftop table through the website for Friday or Saturday evening, or walk in for a bar stool on a Sunday afternoon.

Pair it with dinner at The Baths Sorrento, a ten-minute walk east along the foreshore.

## Walk: Greens Bush Woodland Loop, Merricks North

The yellow-faced honeyeaters are back in the Greens Bush section of Mornington Peninsula National Park and they are not quiet about it. September is the window before the understorey dries out, when the bush smells green-earthy after overnight rain and the gravel tracks are still firm enough to walk fast. The full Greens Bush loop runs approximately 8km from the Baldry Road trailhead - allow two to two-and-a-half hours. The wetland crossing at the northern end of the circuit holds water through September, so you’ll hear frogs before you see them. Banksias are just starting to open new cones. This is one of the better remnant bushland walks on the Peninsula precisely because it doesn’t reward the Instagram instinct - no dramatic headland, no lighthouse, just a working woodland in good form. Wear decent shoes; after rain the clay sections stick.

Pair it with a late lunch at Jackalope Hotel’s Doot Doot Doot, ten minutes north in Merricks North.

## Discovery: Balnarring Farmers’ Market

The third Saturday of the month at Balnarring Recreation Reserve is the market that the Peninsula’s food producers actually attend, not the version curated for a day-tripper circuit. The 19 September edition is the one to mark: new-season garlic is appearing from the Coolart Road growers, and at least two stalls will have the first bunches of spring asparagus - thinner than mid-season, sharper tasting, and sold out by 10am if you arrive late. The egg producers from Merricks and Tuerong are consistent year-round, but the pastured lamb from the Red Hill side runs hot in spring while the summer veggie growers are still setting up. Get there by 8:30am. The coffee stall near the main gate runs a single-origin filter that is better than anything you’ll find in a Sorrento café. The market runs 8am–1pm. No booking, no entry fee, just Coolart Road, Balnarring.

Pair it with a morning walk to the Balnarring Beach foreshore, five minutes south by car.
