## Eat: Flinders Sourdough, Flinders

The almond croissants at Flinders Sourdough are worth the early start. The lamination is tight, the frangipane fills without overwhelming, and they’re gone well before lunch. This is a serious bakery that earns its weekend queue.

The miche and seeded rye loaves are the other reason to go. Both hold their crust for two to three days, which makes them worth buying even if you’re not eating until Sunday. Spring is the right moment to turn up here - the village is not yet at summer capacity, parking is manageable before 9am, and the walk down to the foreshore afterward has an actual point.

The cabinet fills fresh each morning. There’s no value in arriving at 11am and expecting choice. Set the alarm, get there early, and treat the coffee and pastry combination as the plan, not the prelude to a plan.

Allow 20 minutes in the bakery, then pair with a walk down to Flinders Foreshore before the crowds arrive.

## Walk: Bushrangers Bay Cliff Track, Cape Schanck

The stretch of cliff track between Cape Schanck and Bushrangers Bay is at its most persuasive right now. The wattle that closed off the views through August is dropping, the coastal daisy-bush is coming up along the limestone outcrops, and the light on the Southern Ocean in September has that particular sharpness that summer haze removes.

The loop from the Cape Schanck car park runs roughly two hours at an easy pace. The descent to Bushrangers Bay is the high point - a black sand beach with no road access, almost always quieter than the lighthouse car park suggests it will be. You are looking at basalt columns and offshore reefs rather than development. The return via the upper track gives you the lighthouse silhouette from the east, which reads differently than the postcard angle.

Start from the Cape Schanck car park on Boneo Road. No booking, no fee for the track itself. Check Parks Victoria for any seasonal track closures before you go.

Pair with a stop at Flinders Sourdough on the way back through Flinders village.

## Discovery: National Works on Paper 2026, Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery

The National Works on Paper exhibition opened at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery on 5 September and runs until 22 November 2026. It is one of the few genuinely national survey shows the Peninsula hosts, and this year’s edition includes acquisition prizes and awards that mean the gallery is actively building its permanent collection from the selected works.

Works on paper as a category covers a wider territory than it sounds - drawing, print, watercolour, mixed media on paper substrate. The selection here tends to reward close looking rather than room-crossing impact, which suits the gallery’s mid-scale rooms well. The September opening is the right time to go: the show is freshly hung, the commentary cards are still readable, and the Gallery itself is running at spring pace rather than summer-crowd pace.

Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery is at 350 Dunns Road, Mornington. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 11am–4pm. Entry is free. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.

Pair with coffee at Commonfolk on Balmoral Road before or after - the two are a short drive apart.
