## Eat & Drink - The Heritage, Balnarring

The Heritage’s beer garden doesn’t need a seasonal hook, but early September gives it one. The pub is a 1930s heritage home on a two-acre block in the middle of Balnarring, with a sunny deck, a large beer garden, and a grass area and sandpit where children can play.

The menu is country pub done without apology. The pub favourites list is the honest choice: a chicken parma or schnitzel, pub-style fish and chips, or the cheeseburger, with a specials board that changes with what the kitchen has in. Live music plays on the deck most Sunday afternoons.

The Heritage is at 3059 Frankston-Flinders Road, Balnarring. It opens Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30am and is closed Monday and Tuesday. Call 03 5983 2597 to book a table, and leave the dog at home: pets are not allowed in the venue.

Pair it with a walk through the Balnarring conservation reserve before lunch, then finish at Elan Vineyard & Gallery five minutes up the road.

## Experience - Baldry’s Creek Track, Red Hill South

The Baldry’s Creek Track through Arthurs Seat State Park sits in a narrow window right now. The wattle that peaked in August is finishing, and the spider orchids and sun orchids are opening in the clearings along the lower creek section. By mid-October the canopy fills in and you lose both.

The trail runs through mixed stringybark and manna gum forest above a seasonal creek that is still running well after the winter rainfall. The ground stays damp on the shaded sections, which means the mosses and ferns on the creek banks are at full saturation and the track has a density to it that the summer version does not. The air is different too - cold-clean rather than dry.

Access from the Tucks Road trailhead, Red Hill South, inside the Arthurs Seat State Park boundary. Allow 1.5–2 hours return for the creek loop. Waterproof boots are not optional - the lower creek section holds mud well into mid-spring. No booking required, no entry fee.

Walk it early, then drive ten minutes to Jackalope for coffee on the terrace while the vineyard rows start to show the first green buds of the new season.

## Discovery - Hill & Ridge Community Market, Red Hill

The Hill & Ridge Market’s September restart is a reliable Peninsula calendar marker, and this Saturday is the first one after the winter closure. The Red Hill Recreation Reserve ground is at its greenest right now, which matters because half the reason to come is the setting - rolling hill views, post-rain grass, and the kind of unhurried Saturday pace that the summer version loses to crowds.

The stall mix skews local produce and handmade goods rather than mass-market craft. In early September the seasonal produce is the bridge moment - stored-root vegetables from winter growers alongside the first spring brassicas and herb seedlings from the Red Hill soil growers. The bread and pastry stalls sell out by 11am without exception. Arrive by 9:30am if that matters to you.

Hill & Ridge Community Market runs Saturday 5 September, 9am–2pm at Red Hill Recreation Reserve, Red Hill. Entry is free. Check hillandridgemarket.com.au for the stall list. Allow 1.5 hours and bring a bag with actual structure - the produce stalls make the single-handle tote inadequate quickly.

Pair the market with a late breakfast at one of the Red Hill village cafes, or continue south to The Heritage at Balnarring for lunch.

Corrected 13 September 2026: this edition first named the pub as the Balnarring Pub at 2 Coolart Road, with a website that does not exist, walk-in beer-garden tables and daily opening. The pub is The Heritage at 3059 Frankston-Flinders Road, which asks guests to call to book, is closed Monday and Tuesday, and does not allow pets.
