Insider Picks Winter

## Eat & Drink

**Ten Minutes by Tractor’s duck is the reason to leave the house this weekend.**

The Main Ridge kitchen runs a tighter, more focused menu in winter than it does across summer’s fuller sittings. Right now that means duck - specifically a slow-rendered breast with celeriac, black garlic, and whatever the kitchen is pulling from its winter garden that week. It arrives looking restrained and eats as one of the better plates on the Peninsula this season. The wine list tilts Peninsula Pinot Noir hard, which is exactly right. The 2024 McCutcheon single-vineyard is worth asking the sommelier about specifically.

The room itself earns its keep on a cold night: low light, good spacing between tables, and a fireplace the architects clearly understood. This is not a quick lunch stop. Two hours minimum, and don’t skip the cheese course.

**Ten Minutes by Tractor**, 1333 Mornington–Flinders Road, Main Ridge. Lunch and dinner Wednesday–Sunday. Bookings essential - reserve via their website. Pair with an afternoon at a nearby Red Hill cellar door first.

## Walk & Experience

**Cape Schanck’s rock platform is at its most dramatic when Bass Strait is running hard.**

In July, the swell regularly stacks up at Bushrangers Bay below the lighthouse, and the cliff-top boardwalk delivers views of breaking water that simply don’t exist in summer’s flatter conditions. The walk from the Parks Victoria carpark to the lighthouse takes fifteen minutes. From there, a second boardwalk drops to the rock platform - give yourself another twenty minutes each way, and check the platform is open before descending, as Parks Victoria closes it in extreme swell.

Arrive before 9am to have the headland to yourself. The lighthouse itself is Colonial Gothic sandstone, built 1859, and the Cape is where Port Phillip Bay meets open ocean. That geography explains the wind. Dress accordingly.

**Cape Schanck Coastal Park**, Cape Schanck Road, Cape Schanck. Allow 90 minutes for the longer boardwalk outing. There is no vehicle entry fee; check Parks Victoria for changed conditions. Pair with coffee at Flinders Bakehouse on the way back.

## Discovery

**Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery has a photography exhibition that closes this month.**

The gallery’s current temporary show sits upstairs in the two-storey building at Dunns Road and focuses on documentary landscape photography - spare, large-format work that reads better in winter light than it would in a sun-flooded summer gallery. MPRG doesn’t get the foot traffic its collection deserves, which makes a midweek visit genuinely quiet. The permanent collection downstairs includes significant Australian ceramics and prints worth the trip alone.

This is a gallery that locals treat as a standing appointment rather than a one-off. The temporary show is the reason to go this weekend specifically, before it comes down. Check the website to confirm the closing date and any ticketing for the temporary exhibition. The permanent collection is free.

**Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery**, Civic Reserve, Dunns Road, Mornington. Open Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–5pm. Free entry to the permanent collection. Check website for temporary exhibition details. Pair with lunch at a Mornington main street café before or after.
