# Boat Moorings and Berths on the Mornington Peninsula

Annual mooring waiting lists, seasonal moorings you can actually book this season, and the one short-stay berth at Mornington Pier itself - the honest picture of where to put a boat on the Peninsula, and who to actually contact.

Mornington doesn’t have a marina in the Sorrento or Rye sense - what it has is a managed mooring ground, a genuinely competitive annual waiting list, and a seasonal booking system that resets every year. None of that is obvious from the water, and it isn’t obvious from a general web search either. Here’s the actual structure, and who to talk to.

## Annual moorings: the waiting list is real, and it’s the only way in

Parks Victoria runs Waiting Lists at just six locations across Victorian waters where demand for a permanent mooring or berth outstrips supply. Mornington is one of them (the others are Fisherman’s Jetty, Portarlington, San Remo, Werribee and Williamstown). That puts it in genuinely scarce company - this isn’t a formality, it’s a real queue.

How it works:

- Sites are offered in strict order of the date a **complete** application was received - not by boat size, local connections, or urgency.

- If mooring tackle already exists at a site you’re offered, you negotiate buying it directly from the outgoing holder; Parks Victoria isn’t part of that transaction.

- To join the list, email a completed Waiting List Application and every document on the Mandatory Attachment Checklist to **moorings@parks.vic.gov.au**. Missing paperwork stalls the application before it’s even queued.

- For anything specific to your situation, Parks Victoria’s Ranger Moorings & Port Service Operations line is **13 19 63**.

There’s no published estimate of current wait times at Mornington specifically, and it can vary a lot year to year - ask directly when you apply rather than guessing.

## Seasonal moorings: the option that’s actually bookable right now

If an annual mooring isn’t realistic on your timeline, the Seasonal Mooring Program is the practical alternative. It runs across Port Phillip and Western Port - including the Mornington area - typically from late November to late April, and unlike the annual waiting list, you book it directly online for the season, no queue.

The conditions that matter:

- Vessel must be **7m or under**, trailerable, and registered in the permit holder’s name.

- The mooring tackle belongs to Parks Victoria - you can’t modify it, and the permit isn’t transferable to another person or boat.

- Bookings are typically split into first-half, second-half, and full-season options.

- **Check current-season dates, exact mooring locations, and pricing before you book** - Parks Victoria confirms the season and prices fresh each year on its Seasonal Moorings page, and last season’s numbers aren’t a reliable guide to this season’s. The same page has an interactive map so you can see exactly where each mooring sits before committing.

## If you just need to tie up for an hour, not a season

Mornington Pier has one short-stay berth, mostly used by boaters stopping in at The Rocks Restaurant on the pier for a meal. It’s genuinely short-stay - not a place to leave a boat unattended, and not a substitute for a proper mooring if you’re based here for longer than an afternoon.

## Getting it right

- **Annual mooring:** apply to the Mornington Waiting List via moorings@parks.vic.gov.au with every required attachment, then wait your turn - there’s no shortcut.

- **This season only:** use the Seasonal Mooring Program, book online, confirm current dates/pricing/location on Parks Victoria’s site first.

- **Just for lunch:** the single short-stay berth at Mornington Pier, near The Rocks.

- **Questions specific to your boat or situation:** Parks Victoria Ranger Moorings & Port Service Operations, 13 19 63.

Last fact-verified: 21 August 2026 against Parks Victoria’s published mooring and waiting list pages.

Costs, dates and availability are set by Parks Victoria and change each season - confirm current figures directly with Parks Victoria before applying or booking.

Questions readers actually ask

## FAQ

How do I get a boat mooring at Mornington?

Mornington is one of only six Victorian locations (alongside Fisherman's Jetty, Portarlington, San Remo, Werribee and Williamstown) where Parks Victoria operates an official Waiting List for annual moorings and berths, because demand exceeds available sites. Sites are offered strictly in order of application date once something becomes free - there is no way to skip the queue. Register by emailing moorings@parks.vic.gov.au with a completed Waiting List Application and the Mandatory Attachment Checklist; incomplete applications are not processed.

Can I just book a mooring for a season instead of waiting for an annual one?

Yes - Parks Victoria's Seasonal Mooring Program runs Peninsula-wide (including the Mornington area) from late November to late April each year and is bookable online without joining the annual waiting list. It suits trailerable boats up to 7m registered to the permit holder. Check the current season's exact dates, mooring locations (via Parks Victoria's interactive moorings map) and pricing before booking, since these are set fresh each season and change year to year - do not rely on last season's figures.

Is there anywhere to just tie up at Mornington short-term?

Mornington Pier has one short-stay berth, used mainly by visitors calling in to The Rocks Restaurant on the pier. It is not a general-purpose visitor berth and isn't a substitute for a proper mooring or marina berth if you need to leave a boat unattended for any length of time.
