# Mornington & the Bay

The Peninsula's urban edge: the main street dining strip, the bay beaches, and the easy weekend gateway.

Photo · Courtesy of Visit Victoria

Mornington is the Peninsula's largest town and its most accessible gateway. The main street dining strip punches above its weight, the bay beaches stretch from Mount Eliza to Dromana, and the Saturday morning market is a Peninsula institution. This is where the Peninsula starts, the transition from Melbourne's suburbs to something genuinely different. Mount Martha's elevated bay views and the Dromana hillside are the scenic punctuation marks. For first-timers, this is the entry point. For regulars, it is often overlooked in favour of the tip or the ridge, which is a mistake.

## Places in Mornington & the Bay

Bay Coast · town

### [Capel Sound](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/capel-sound/>)

Capel Sound runs along Port Phillip Bay west of Rosebud and east of Tootgarook. Its long beach, foreshore campsites and flat Bay Trail make walking and camping the main reasons to stop. Cafes and shops sit across Point Nepean Road from the reserve. Summer camping rules and availability change by season, so check the foreshore operator before making plans. The locality was renamed from Rosebud West in 2016.

Bay Coast · town

### [Dromana](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/dromana/>)

Dromana is the town at the foot of Arthurs Seat, and the practical hinge between the bay road and the hinterland behind it. Look one way and the long shallow beach runs uninterrupted toward Safety Beach; look the other and the land climbs fast into pinot country. Because of that geography, Dromana has always carried more than its weight - it is where many of the Peninsula's founding wineries planted their first vines in the 1970s, where Crittenden and the Dromana Estate groundstock still sit, and where the ferry from the ocean side of the ridge puts locals back on the bay in fifteen minutes. The town itself is unpretentious: a foreshore, a pier, a post-war main drag quietly modernising. Use it as a base for Red Hill without paying Red Hill prices, swim in the morning, drive up for lunch, and come back down in time for a sunset on the beach.

Bay Coast · town

### [McCrae](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/mccrae/>)

McCrae sits quietly between Dromana and Rosebud, often skipped over by people who treat the bay drive as a single line - which is a shame, because it has the best small-town beach on this stretch and the oldest building still standing on the Peninsula. The McCrae Lighthouse is the postcard, and Andrew McCrae's 1844 homestead, still set in its original garden, is the kind of history that survives only by being mostly forgotten. The foreshore here is a clean, gently shelving bay beach with bathing boxes and a long swimming pier, and the residential streets behind run up to the foot of Arthurs Seat. It is the sort of town that locals on the Peninsula use as a base when Dromana is too busy and Rosebud is too sprawling. Stay here for calm-water swimming and the back-of-Arthurs lookout walks; do not come for nightlife.

Mornington · town

### [Mornington](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/mornington/>)

Mornington was the gateway town for a long time - the first real stop on the road south, somewhere to buy petrol before pressing on to beaches and vineyards. That undersells it now. A genuinely good main street, a Wednesday farmers' market on the Esplanade worth getting up for, a foreshore with bathing boxes and a saltwater pool - Mornington has quietly become a whole-day destination rather than a waypoint. It's also the most practical Peninsula base: north to Mount Martha's beaches, south to Red Hill's vineyards, fifteen minutes from coast in either direction.

Mornington · town

### [Mount Eliza](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/mount-eliza/>)

Mount Eliza is the Peninsula's northern threshold and, depending on how you read it, either its most affluent commuter suburb or its most underrated bay-side town. Both are true. The village strip on Mount Eliza Way is short, well-fed and self-aware - a few of the best independent cafés on the Peninsula are here - and the back streets fall down to a string of small bay beaches that locals have managed to keep more or less to themselves. Canadian Bay is the headline; Ranelagh has the postcard staircase; Sunnyside is the unofficial nudist beach for the brave. The town is independent-school country - Toorak, Peninsula Grammar, St Catherine's - which sets a particular weekend cadence: tennis-club mornings, café brunches, school-pickup-hour traffic. Stay here if you want a base that is closer to Melbourne than the rest of the Peninsula and quietly better-fed than its neighbours.

Mornington · village

### [Mount Martha](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/mount-martha/>)

Mount Martha is the Peninsula's best-kept secret for people who only want to do one thing: stop. This is swimming-beach country - a long, gentle curve of pale sand with bathing boxes at the northern end, south-facing enough to catch afternoon sun, and sheltered enough from the wind to be usable almost nine months of the year. The village proper sits up on the hill, compact and quiet, with a bakery, a few cafes, and enough infrastructure to get through a weekend without ever needing to drive further than the beach. South of the village, the coastal track winds toward the Briars wetlands and eventually down to Mornington; north, it runs into the foreshore reserve and the bathing boxes. It is the simplest, cleanest Peninsula day on Port Phillip: swim, walk, coffee, repeat.

Bay Coast · town

### [Rosebud](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/rosebud/>)

Rosebud is the largest of the bayside towns and the one locals use when they actually want something done - a supermarket, a hardware store, an everyday main street that has not yet been aestheticised into a postcard. That practicality is also its charm. The beach is long and genuinely good, with a sheltered swimming area and grass right up to the sand; the jetty is a quiet fishing spot at dusk; and a string of ethnic kitchens along Point Nepean Road provide the kind of honest, unheralded lunches that make a weekend on the Peninsula feel less like a brochure and more like a real place. Use Rosebud as your resupply stop, but don't rush through it.

Bay Coast · town

### [Safety Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/safety-beach/>)

Safety Beach is the long shallow crescent between Mount Martha and Dromana - the kind of bay beach where the water is calm enough for very small children and the ridge behind it is steep enough to put you among vineyards in under ten minutes. For most of its history it was a quiet caravan-and-holiday-house stretch; in the last decade it has slowly sharpened, with a marina at the western end, a handful of smarter houses lining the foreshore, and a couple of genuinely good food stops using the view properly. It is a useful place to stay for anyone who wants a base that works equally for beach mornings and hinterland afternoons.

### [Dromana Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/dromana-beach/>)

Dromana Beach is a long, gentle arc of sand near the midpoint of the Peninsula - a forgiving bay beach with shallow, calm water and enough stretch to absorb a weekend crowd without losing its charm. The foreshore is backed by lawn and shade trees; the pier runs out into the bay and is a quiet spot for fishing at dawn or dusk. This is the bayside beach to use when you want a straightforward family day without the parking battles of Sorrento or Rye. The town strip behind the beach has enough for an impromptu lunch or a coffee run, and the position puts you in the right place to drive up to the hinterland for an afternoon cellar-door session. Good for swimmers at any standard, especially good for children, and reliably uncrowded outside the peak school-holiday weeks.

### [Mornington Peninsula Foreshore Walk](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/mornington-foreshore-walk/>)

The foreshore walk between Mornington and Mount Martha is the Peninsula's most dog-friendly significant walk and one of its most reliably beautiful - seven kilometres one way along the coast, with sweeping Port Phillip Bay views, heritage bathing boxes, clifftop lookouts, and several quiet little beaches you can detour into along the way. Start at Mornington Pier and walk south toward Mount Martha, or reverse the direction for a later-afternoon light run. The track is well-formed throughout, accessible to most fitness levels, and supports everything from a fast morning run to a leisurely family stroll. It is the best long morning walk on the bayside, followed by coffee at either end. For the full seven kilometres, allow 90 minutes walking at a brisk pace or two hours with stops. For a shorter segment, the stretch between Mills Beach and Fossil Beach is particularly good.

### [Mornington Golf Club](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/mornington-golf-club/>)

Mornington Golf Club is the closest Peninsula course to Melbourne - about 60 minutes from the CBD via the freeway. That proximity makes it the obvious choice for a day-trip round or an after-work nine, and the reason casual Melbourne golfers know it well. The course itself is parkland, relatively short, and more practical than dramatic. Not the round you drive down for; the round you take when you are already in Mornington. Visitor play is straightforward - the club takes public bookings, and the weekend pressure is less than at the coastal links courses. The facilities are solid. The course drains reasonably well through winter. Pricing is fair. For a first-visit Peninsula golfer who wants to play somewhere scenic without the drive to Cape Schanck or Fingal, Mornington is a reasonable start. Pair it with brunch at Commonfolk, a walk along the Esplanade, and the Wednesday farmers' market if your timing lines up.

### [Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/mornington-peninsula-gallery/>)

MPRG is the region's most consistently interesting art institution - a public gallery with a permanent collection weighted toward Australian modernism and a rotating program of contemporary shows that punches well above the town's weight. The building is understated, the staff are genuinely helpful, and entry is free. This is the Peninsula's best wet-weather fallback, and more importantly it is the move that stops a Mornington day from feeling like a brunch-and-shop circuit. Check the program before you go - the photography and print shows are especially good, and the gallery occasionally lands major national touring exhibitions that would normally require a drive into the city. Combine with lunch on the Mornington main street and a walk down to the Esplanade afterwards.

### [Mount Martha Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/mount-martha-beach/>)

Mount Martha is the gentlest swim on the Peninsula. The beach curves south in a long, shallow arc of pale sand, protected from the prevailing winds, shallow enough for kids, and deep enough fifty metres out for a real swim. The northern end carries the famous heritage-listed bathing boxes; the southern end runs into the coastal reserve and eventually hits the cliff track south toward Balcombe. Unlike the back beaches at Sorrento, this is a swim-first beach rather than a walk-first one. If you only have one bay-facing afternoon on the Peninsula and you want it to feel genuinely restorative rather than dramatic, come here. Easy parking outside of January. A single beach kiosk. Nothing to plan - which is exactly the point.

### [Rosebud Country Club](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/rosebud-country-club/>)

Rosebud Country Club runs three nine-hole courses (North, South, and East) that mix-and-match into 18-hole rounds. Not a prestige destination, but one of the most played Peninsula courses for a reason - public access, good value, reasonable conditioning, and a central location that sits between Mornington and the southern tip. For the casual Peninsula golfer, or a mixed-skill group, it is probably the most forgiving way to get a round in without driving to Cape Schanck. The parkland/light-dune mix means holes play differently to the coastal links courses. Less spectacular, less punishing, and generally more enjoyable for mid-handicappers. Facilities are adequate rather than polished. Pricing is genuinely competitive - one of the few Peninsula courses where green fees sit at the affordable end of the local range on most days. Good for walking (carts available) and good for beginners. Book online or walk up on quiet weekdays.

[Safety Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/safety-beach/>) 2 h

### [Safety Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/safety-beach-foreshore/>)

Safety Beach is the Peninsula's most reliably calm swimming beach - the name is genuinely accurate - and the right answer when you have a young family, a nervous swimmer, or simply want to walk along a long flat shoreline without the theatre of the back beaches. The water is shallow, warm even by April standards, and the bay rarely produces any real chop along this stretch. The foreshore runs for kilometres between Safety Beach and Mount Martha and is good for long early-morning walks or slow afternoon sits. Martha's Table sits a short stroll away for post-swim aperitivo, and the marina at the northern end is a quiet place to watch the boats at dusk. Best in the early morning or the hour before sunset. The middle of the day on a hot summer weekend can get busy, but the stretch is long enough to find your own patch.
