Keep this for later

At a glance

- 01 Choose a two-night inland base for a Red Hill lunch, or a Flinders/Sorrento village base for coastal evenings.

- 02 Book one Saturday long lunch first; add a short walk, tasting or bathing session only if there is room.

- 03 Friday: arrive and dine close to your stay. Sunday: breakfast and one optional stop before home.

A Peninsula weekend can easily turn into a two-day festival: six cellar doors, two long lunches, hot springs and a sunset stop. The version that stays with you has one meal worth planning around and room for everything else.

## Choose your base: inland lunch or coastal evenings

If Saturday’s long lunch is the centrepiece, stay inland near Red Hill or Merricks. If the village and coast are the point, base yourselves in Flinders or Sorrento and allow for the drive to lunch. Book that meal first, then the two-night stay.

**Inland with your own space:** **Polperro Villas** and **Crittenden Villas** put the landscape close. Polperro’s villas have king-size beds, fireplaces, spa baths and private decks; its operator lists a two-night weekend minimum. Confirm the individual villa’s facilities before booking.

**Inland with hotel service:** **Jackalope** in Merricks North is the more theatrical choice, with Doot Doot Doot on the property. **Lindenderry** offers a quieter Red Hill country-estate base.

**Coastal village:** **Flinders Hotel** or a Sorrento stay lets the town shape the evening. Check the walk from your actual room to dinner before assuming you can leave the car behind.

## Friday night: arrive and do one thing

Allow for traffic and check-in, then head to your stay without adding a first stop. Keep dinner close to your room:

- **Inland villa:** Cook something simple in the kitchen with produce you picked up on the way down, or bring a cheese board. Ask your accommodation about any food add-ons.

- **Inland hotel:** Reserve **Doot Doot Doot** if you stay at Jackalope. Theatrically good, and walking back to your room afterwards is part of the appeal of staying here.

- **Coastal village:** Walk to the pub. **Flinders Hotel** bistro or the **Hotel Sorrento** front bar. Nothing fancy. Eat, drink, sleep.

## Saturday: the one big meal

Keep the morning and afternoon flexible around the long lunch.

### Morning

Sleep in. Make coffee. Bring back a pastry if a bakery is nearby; **Flinders Sourdough** currently opens from 9am on weekends, so leave an earlier breakfast to your accommodation. Keep it light before lunch.

If you want movement, take a walk. **Coppins Track** near Sorrento and the **Cape Schanck Boardwalk** offer coastal air; **Bushrangers Bay** asks for a longer outing. Choose a signed route that fits the weather and your lunch booking. None of these are mandatory. Sitting on the deck with a second coffee is an equally valid Saturday morning.

### The lunch

Book one of three restaurants. Pick based on mood, not status:

- **Ten Minutes by Tractor** if the meal itself is the event. A considered estate meal for an anniversary or birthday. Check the current menu and reservation length with the restaurant.

- **Tedesca Osteria** if you want to be surprised. Set menu, farmhouse kitchen, wood-oven cooking, everyone eating the same thing. The lunch for couples who would rather leave the menu to the kitchen.

- **Montalto** if you want the full estate afternoon: sculpture garden before, olive grove beside you, kitchen garden behind, and a terrace that invites a longer lunch.

### Afternoon

Choose one afternoon move, or none. For Kooyong wines, check the current tastings at [Port Phillip Estate’s cellar door](<https://www.portphillipestate.com.au/cellar-door-tastings/>). If bathing is the priority, book **Peninsula Hot Springs** or **Alba Thermal Springs**. Otherwise, go back and rest.

### Saturday night

Keep Saturday dinner simple after the long lunch: cheese and charcuterie at the accommodation, or a pub meal at **Flinders Hotel** or **The Heritage** in Balnarring. Check service before relying on a walk-in table.

## Sunday: the gentle exit

Sunday morning is slow. Coffee. Bakery. Maybe a short walk if the weather is right. Check your accommodation’s checkout time.

On the way home, stop once:

- **The sculpture park at Pt. Leo** if you have not been. The park opens from 11am; check current access before you go. The Wine Terrace serves lunch from noon on Sundays.

- A farm-gate stop: **Green Olive at Red Hill** for olive oil, or **Red Hill Cheese** for something to take home.

- **Mornington** for a browse along Main Street, then a separate stop at **Commonfolk** on Progress Street if you want coffee.

Leave when you are ready, allowing for the traffic you actually find.

**Planning check, 30 September 2026:** [Polperro Villas](<https://www.polperrowines.com.au/escape/villas/>) currently lists a two-night weekend minimum; [Polperro dining](<https://www.polperrowines.com.au/>) lists Saturday dinner and Wednesday–Sunday lunch. Confirm hours, menus and availability for your dates with each venue.

Questions readers actually ask

## A few practical answers.

**How should we structure two nights on the Mornington Peninsula?**

Choose one base and book two nights, then reserve one Saturday meal as the centrepiece. Leave the rest of the day loose and make Sunday a one-stop journey home.

**Which meal should we book first?**

Book the restaurant that matters most to you before filling the day. Ten Minutes by Tractor, Tedesca Osteria and Montalto offer different styles of long lunch; check each venue's current menu and availability.

**Can we add the hot springs?**

Yes, if you leave the afternoon free for it. Alba and Peninsula Hot Springs both offer online bathing bookings; choose one and confirm the session and access included before reserving dinner.
