# Rosebud

Rosebud is a bayside town on the Mornington Peninsula's southern Port Phillip shoreline, 85 km from Melbourne, with an 8 km foreshore camping reserve and a long shallow swimming beach.

Rosebud is the largest of the bayside towns and the one locals use when they actually want something done - a supermarket, a hardware store, an everyday main street that has not yet been aestheticised into a postcard. That practicality is also its charm. The beach is long and genuinely good, with a sheltered swimming area and grass right up to the sand; the jetty is a quiet fishing spot at dusk; and a string of ethnic kitchens along Point Nepean Road provide the kind of honest, unheralded lunches that make a weekend on the Peninsula feel less like a brochure and more like a real place. Use Rosebud as your resupply stop, but don't rush through it.

Rosebud in brief

## Rosebud in 4 points

- 01 Rosebud is the Peninsula's most liveable bay town - long foreshore, practical main street, and a beach that genuinely delivers without requiring effort.

- 02 Best for: families who need a full-service town; foreshore campers; day visitors who want a long beach walk and an honest lunch.

- 03 Signature experience: morning swim, pier walk at dusk, dinner at one of the unpretentious ethnic kitchens on Point Nepean Road.

- 04 Half a day to full day; foreshore camping makes it a natural overnight stop.

### [Rosebud Country Club](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/rosebud-country-club/>)

Rosebud Country Club runs three nine-hole courses (North, South, and East) that mix-and-match into 18-hole rounds. Not a prestige destination, but one of the most played Peninsula courses for a reason - public access, good value, reasonable conditioning, and a central location that sits between Mornington and the southern tip. For the casual Peninsula golfer, or a mixed-skill group, it is probably the most forgiving way to get a round in without driving to Cape Schanck. The parkland/light-dune mix means holes play differently to the coastal links courses. Less spectacular, less punishing, and generally more enjoyable for mid-handicappers. Facilities are adequate rather than polished. Pricing is genuinely competitive - one of the few Peninsula courses where green fees sit at the affordable end of the local range on most days. Good for walking (carts available) and good for beginners. Book online or walk up on quiet weekdays.

### [Dromana](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/dromana/>)

Dromana is the town at the foot of Arthurs Seat, and the practical hinge between the bay road and the hinterland behind it. Look one way and the long shallow beach runs uninterrupted toward Safety Beach; look the other and the land climbs fast into pinot country. Because of that geography, Dromana has always carried more than its weight - it is where many of the Peninsula's founding wineries planted their first vines in the 1970s, where Crittenden and the Dromana Estate groundstock still sit, and where the ferry from the ocean side of the ridge puts locals back on the bay in fifteen minutes. The town itself is unpretentious: a foreshore, a pier, a post-war main drag quietly modernising. Use it as a base for Red Hill without paying Red Hill prices, swim in the morning, drive up for lunch, and come back down in time for a sunset on the beach.

### [Rye](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/rye/>)

Rye sits on the lower Peninsula between Tootgarook and Blairgowrie. The bay-facing front beach has a pier and sheltered water; the ocean-facing back beach is a separate outing with different conditions. Point Nepean Road gives visitors places to eat and shop, while the Fingal hot springs are a drive inland. Use Rye as a base for both coasts, and check beach conditions before swimming.

Peninsula Tip · town

### [Sorrento](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/sorrento/>)

Sorrento is where the Peninsula narrows to a point and the social temperature rises. This is old-money beach culture done with increasing sophistication - limestone cliffs, a ferry to Queenscliff across the Heads, ocean baths carved from rock at low tide - alongside a main street that has quietly evolved into something genuinely worth driving for. The summer crowd is real and relentless, but the town earns it. Off-season Sorrento is a revelation: the light changes, the restaurants empty out to their best selves, and you can walk the ocean beach from one end to the other without encountering anyone but locals. The back beach at dusk is one of the best things on the Peninsula, full stop. Stay at least two nights.
