Flinders is a coastal village on the Mornington Peninsula's southern Bass Strait edge, 105 km from Melbourne, with a working pier, marine sanctuary and a ranked golf course.

Flinders sits on the wild southern edge of the Peninsula and carries itself with a kind of salt-air confidence. The village is compact but smart - a bakery, a handful of good shops, an old pub, and a coastline that feels a world away from the bay-facing polish further north. Base yourself here if you want your mornings to begin with wind off Bass Strait, your afternoons with a drive back inland for lunch, and your evenings under a harder, cleaner sky.

Is Flinders the right base?

## Who this place rewards - and who should keep driving

### It's for

- quiet weekends

- golf

- people who already know the Peninsula

### It's not for

- cheap accommodation

- anyone expecting nightlife

Expecting Sorrento - Flinders is quieter, more local, deliberately understated.

Flinders in brief

## Flinders in 4 points

- 01 Flinders is the Peninsula's most complete ocean-coast village - a bakery, a pub, a world-class golf course, and a marine sanctuary immediately offshore.

- 02 Best for: serious golfers; divers after the Flinders Blowhole; anyone who wants a southern-edge village base without driving to the tip.

- 03 Signature experience: walk the coastal reserve past the blowhole at high tide, then a long lunch in the village.

- 04 Full day; Flinders rewards staying rather than passing through.

A perfect day here

## A day in Flinders

### [Flinders Golf Club](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/flinders-golf-club/>)

Flinders Golf Club sits above West Head at the southern edge of the Peninsula - an 18-hole course with some of the best views any Australian golfer can see from a tee box. The layout is short, scenic, and genuinely fun. Not a course to cross the state for, but exactly the right course to play on a weekend in Flinders when the point is the view and the pace rather than championship architecture. The membership is small and welcoming. Visitor play is generally accepted for green fees, though it pays to ring ahead. The clubhouse is relaxed. The whole thing feels more like a country club from a kinder era than a modern facility - which is exactly its appeal. Plan a round around your Flinders stay, and check visitor tee times with the club. One of the more underrated Peninsula golf experiences, and a strong addition to a Flinders-based weekend.

Short days, cheap rooms, empty dining rooms, a fire in every cellar door with a hearth, and a coast that looks like a different country in a southerly. Winter is the Peninsula's most underrated season and the one that gives the region back to the people who actually live here.

Flinders is the quiet southern village that proves the Peninsula does not need theatre to be good. Come for the harder light, the ocean edge, and a day shaped by a walk, a bakery and one proper lunch rather than a schedule full of noise.

The long lunches get the headlines. But the Peninsula's first hour of the day - the flat white, the croissant out of the oven, the eggs on a working bakery's sourdough - is the quieter, better-value half of the food story. Here is where locals go, and the order to do it in.

## Nearby places worth knowing next

Because a Peninsula trip is always made up of two or three pockets, not one.

Red Hill · village

### [Red Hill](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/red-hill/>)

On a misty basalt plateau above the Peninsula's central ridge, Red Hill has arranged some of the strongest food and wine in Victoria into a circuit that rewards the unhurried. A village by strict measure - a general store, a monthly market, vineyard restaurants that don't advertise from the highway - it nonetheless organises the whole upper Peninsula around itself. The winery restaurant cluster here - Ten Minutes by Tractor, Montalto, Paringa Estate, Principia - has no serious peer in the state. Come on Saturday; plan lunch first.

Peninsula Tip · town

### [Sorrento](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/sorrento/>)

Sorrento is where the Peninsula narrows to a point and the social temperature rises. This is old-money beach culture done with increasing sophistication - limestone cliffs, a ferry to Queenscliff across the Heads, ocean baths carved from rock at low tide - alongside a main street that has quietly evolved into something genuinely worth driving for. The summer crowd is real and relentless, but the town earns it. Off-season Sorrento is a revelation: the light changes, the restaurants empty out to their best selves, and you can walk the ocean beach from one end to the other without encountering anyone but locals. The back beach at dusk is one of the best things on the Peninsula, full stop. Stay at least two nights.
