Dromana is a bayside town on the Mornington Peninsula's eastern Port Phillip shoreline, 75 km from Melbourne, at the foot of Arthurs Seat State Park.

Dromana is the town at the foot of Arthurs Seat, and the practical hinge between the bay road and the hinterland behind it. Look one way and the long shallow beach runs uninterrupted toward Safety Beach; look the other and the land climbs fast into pinot country. Because of that geography, Dromana has always carried more than its weight - it is where many of the Peninsula's founding wineries planted their first vines in the 1970s, where Crittenden and the Dromana Estate groundstock still sit, and where the ferry from the ocean side of the ridge puts locals back on the bay in fifteen minutes. The town itself is unpretentious: a foreshore, a pier, a post-war main drag quietly modernising. Use it as a base for Red Hill without paying Red Hill prices, swim in the morning, drive up for lunch, and come back down in time for a sunset on the beach.

Is Dromana the right base?

## Who this place rewards - and who should keep driving

### It's for

- families

- first-timers who need orientation

- Arthur's Seat

### It's not for

- people chasing a polished village feel

- travellers without a car

Spending a whole day here - it's better as a base or a stop than a destination.

Dromana in brief

## Dromana in 4 points

- 01 Dromana is the practical hinge between the bay and the hinterland - base camp for Arthurs Seat, the gondola, and the wine country immediately behind it.

- 02 Best for: families using it as a base for Arthurs Seat Eagle; wine visitors who want bay access; anyone who wants Red Hill proximity without Red Hill prices.

- 03 Signature experience: Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola in the morning, then drive up to a Red Hill cellar door for lunch.

- 04 Full day or overnight; pairs naturally with Safety Beach and Red Hill.

A perfect day here

## A day in Dromana

Arthur's Seat Eagle in the morning, lunch in Dromana, drive up to the ridge in the afternoon.

The beach west of the pier is usually quieter than the central foreshore and still close to everything.

### [Dromana Beach](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/dromana-beach/>)

Dromana Beach is a long, gentle arc of sand near the midpoint of the Peninsula - a forgiving bay beach with shallow, calm water and enough stretch to absorb a weekend crowd without losing its charm. The foreshore is backed by lawn and shade trees; the pier runs out into the bay and is a quiet spot for fishing at dawn or dusk. This is the bayside beach to use when you want a straightforward family day without the parking battles of Sorrento or Rye. The town strip behind the beach has enough for an impromptu lunch or a coffee run, and the position puts you in the right place to drive up to the hinterland for an afternoon cellar-door session. Good for swimmers at any standard, especially good for children, and reliably uncrowded outside the peak school-holiday weeks.

## Nearby places worth knowing next

Because a Peninsula trip is always made up of two or three pockets, not one.

Red Hill · village

### [Main Ridge](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/main-ridge/>)

Main Ridge is the highest part of the Peninsula wine country, and the most forgiving to pinot noir. A few degrees cooler than Red Hill proper, wetter in winter, and foggy on the right mornings - if you drew the perfect place to grow cool-climate grapes in Victoria, it would look something like this. There is no real village centre, just a crossroads, a hall, and a handful of the most serious cellar doors on the Peninsula scattered through ferny side roads. Main Ridge rewards people who want to understand wine country rather than just photograph it: the single-vineyard bottles from this sub-region are consistently among the region's best, the estates are small and run by the people who own them, and nobody is trying to sell you a wedding venue. Come for a morning tasting at one of the serious producers, then drive ten minutes in any direction for lunch.

Mornington · village

### [Mount Martha](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/mount-martha/>)

Mount Martha is the Peninsula's best-kept secret for people who only want to do one thing: stop. This is swimming-beach country - a long, gentle curve of pale sand with bathing boxes at the northern end, south-facing enough to catch afternoon sun, and sheltered enough from the wind to be usable almost nine months of the year. The village proper sits up on the hill, compact and quiet, with a bakery, a few cafes, and enough infrastructure to get through a weekend without ever needing to drive further than the beach. South of the village, the coastal track winds toward the Briars wetlands and eventually down to Mornington; north, it runs into the foreshore reserve and the bathing boxes. It is the simplest, cleanest Peninsula day on Port Phillip: swim, walk, coffee, repeat.

Red Hill · village

### [Red Hill](<https://peninsulainsider.com.au/explore/places/red-hill/>)

On a misty basalt plateau above the Peninsula's central ridge, Red Hill has arranged some of the strongest food and wine in Victoria into a circuit that rewards the unhurried. A village by strict measure - a general store, a monthly market, vineyard restaurants that don't advertise from the highway - it nonetheless organises the whole upper Peninsula around itself. The winery restaurant cluster here - Ten Minutes by Tractor, Montalto, Paringa Estate, Principia - has no serious peer in the state. Come on Saturday; plan lunch first.
